It feels a bit silly to be lugging around a jumper, a parka, and a beanie, when the weather is a balmy 26 degrees. But summer is when the Australian Women's Ice Hockey League has its annual tournament. So last weekend I packed warmly and headed to the Canterbury Olympic Ice Rink, for the second set of home games for the Sydney Sirens - this time, against the Brisbane Goannas.

Random musings:

* It's a sign of how few sporting events I've attended, that it still surprises me to hear the national anthem played at the start.

* The first puck drop seemed to be ceremonial, so that an honoured guest could carry it out.

* The goal horn only sounded for the home team, which for me made it harder to keep track of when a goal was scored.

* I was impressed every time a goalie caught the puck in her glove.

* It still looks cool when a player feints past an opponent, or bounces the puck off the boards.

* Also cool to see them swooping and gliding across the ice (or occasionally sliding like a penguin).

The Sirens won both games, 5-4 and 5-2. The next set of home games is in January against the Melbourne Ice, who were the champions last season...
