Four years ago today, after my friends had told me about it, I logged onto Ragnarok Online for the first time. I had no idea what I was in for.

A year and a half later, I logged off for the last time. It broke my heart to leave.

The time in between was a whole other lifetime.

From stepping onto the training grounds as a novice in a cotton shirt and armed with a knife - from defeating that first little poring and collecting that first shiny jellopy -

All the way to becoming a hunter who could stalk the depths of Glast Heim without fear - who could defend the walls of a Prontera fort alongside trusted guildmates in the War of Emperium -

Late night XP parties. Early morning sieges. Long hours of level grinding. Lazy days just hanging out in town. Cute monsters. Crazy headgear. Sudden death by Dark Lord manifesting when you're just hunting ghouls.

I have never been so consumed by a game before. I never will be again.

Back then, I posted frequently about my adventures online. But because there was so much else going on at the time, I never posted about those end days.

But it's probably about time I did.

Here's to days of auld lang syne.

This is the time to remember
'Cause it will not last forever
These are the days to hold on to
'Cause we won't although we want to
This is the time
But time is gonna change
I know we've got to move somehow
But I don't want to lose you now

Sometimes it's so easy to let a day slip on by
Without even seeing each other at all
But this is the time you'll turn back and so will I
And those will be days you can never recall

At the end of my first six months of playing RO, I put together a list of memorable moments. Now that another six months have passed, I've decided to put together a new list of memorable moments since then.

Also, for ease of reference, I've collected together all my previous RO LiveJournal posts under Ragnarok Online memories.

RO memories - Part 2 )

One year ago today, I started playing Ragnarok Online.

RO. Yesterday's siege.

Once again, the plan was to help No Love get their fort back. So we gathered outside Valkyrie Realms 4, and when the siege began, we launched the attack. This time, kirbywiz was helping Gaia defend, and so were Playmates. Now, no room for hesitation or for holding back. The lines were drawn.

RO. Last Thursday's siege.

After the disaster which was the previous siege, our objective was simple - help No Love regain their fort, Valkyrie Realms 4.

Simple doesn't mean easy, however.

RO. Last Sunday's siege.

It was meant to be the start of Shin Ravenloft's new War of Emperium campaign. Our first objective: to take and hold the Prontera castle Valkyrie Realms 5, also known as Gondul.

But as they say, no battle plan ever survives contact with the enemy.

Today we ride for Gondul! )

RO.

I don't have the heart for pretty words right now.

Last Thursday's siege, we lost the fort we had won so valiantly the siege before. I wasn't there that day, since I had to work. You could say that ultimately it was the lack of numbers that did us in, but from what I can gather things were a lot messier and uglier than that. I won't go into details - I wasn't witness, and it would only be hearsay.

But this loss wasn't something that weighed on me heavily. Because that same day, out of the blue, Lumialle came back to RO again. And it was good - like the old days when WOE was little more than a distant rumour, when we could just mess around and have fun.

On Saturday, we went to Juno, the new city in the sky. Shin Jace led us there, a whole big group, giving us his unique tour guide commentary along the way. Juno itself is gorgeous. Ancient and stately buildings, mysterious pillars of light lining the streets, and bridges arcing across the heavens. We spent a while exploring the city. In a classroom, we all took seats while DarkDragon got up in front of the blackboard and started quizzing us on bits of historical trivia. We all got into the spirit of things, taking turns asking questions on different subjects. Shin Jace said something along the lines of, "Screw WOE, this is more fun," and I was inclined to agree. It was one of those moments you know you'll always remember.

Then during Sunday's siege, we helped our allies Slaughtered Saints get a Payon fort against ferocious opposition. Fatty Chubby Kitties, the owners of the fort, had most of the Payon Alliance helping them defend, and there were also other guilds vying with us for the same fort. I have no idea how many times I died during that siege - twenty? fifty? more? But our hard work paid off when Slaughtered Saints got their fort. Whatever else, we did a good thing that day.

Lunakitty called a guild meeting on Monday. The winds of change are blowing for Shin Ravenloft. Only time will tell whether it is for good or ill.

I haven't been playing for the past few days. But the news has been going around that several people have been hacked and their items stolen, which is always upsetting. Slaughtered Saints lost their fort in today's siege. And on top of all that I log on tonight to find that Neshtall has decided he has had enough and is quitting RO.

I don't know what I should be feeling after this week. Too tired for anything but sleep.

So there was this thread on Emperium.org comparing yakuza clans and their power struggles to the War of Emperium drama on RO. And then:

shepelt: i heard many gang members in korea play MMORPG... and even use it as a source of income (ebaying... you know...)

Fluker: I thought gangster are suppose to sell drugs and get protection money from people, not play computers games

shepelt: they import workers from third world countries and teach them how to play MMORPGs then lock them up in a room where they are forced to play games all day to make money in game xD that's what i heard about them.

HealingWind: WOW, that would be my dream job.

...

But right now I don't care about WOE drama at all.

Because there are better things to think about.

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

RO.

I got way too little sleep last night because I was up late typing out my con report. Still, I set my alarm to wake me early so I could be up in time for today's siege. An hour earlier than the usual Thursday siege time, of course, since daylight saving time has finished in Australia.

On the other hand, no one thought to tell me that daylight saving time has now started in America.

So I logged on an hour late and didn't even realise it for a while. I wish I had been there earlier - I'm not entirely sure what difference my presence would have made, but I like to think it would have had some effect.

Auson flushed a dull red, and looked away. "Just trying to stir up a little action. We've been on this damned blockade duty a frigging year."

"Stir up action," Thorne muttered disgustedly. "You would."

RO.

When I woke up on Sunday morning, the guild castle records reported that Shin Ravenloft had been in possession of Valkyrie Realms 3 for twenty days. By the time I went to bed that night, the counter had been reset to zero.

The is the story of how that happened.

RO.

Yesterday's siege was a blur of action from start to finish. We had a castle to defend - a castle we had possessed once before, and lost. Now that we had reclaimed it, we didn't want to lose it again. For one thing, if we did, we risked being seen as an easy mark by the other guilds.

I spent the two hours of the siege in the emperium room, where the last line of defence was. As soon as the siege began, we were attacked, and it didn't let up until it was over. They just kept coming and coming, all different guilds - e.V.o and Chi No Ryu and Elf and more besides. But we kept the defences up, and there were no disconnects to trouble us this time. Almost before I knew it, the siege was over, and the castle was still ours.

Shin Ravenloft may not be one of the big guilds, but we're not an easy mark either.

What was significant this time was the value of intelligence - having scouts in other parts of the castle who could report on enemy numbers and movements. Receiving warning right before every attack proved to be extremely useful. Also, this time we were able to activate the guardians - giant automatons who patrolled the castle and attacked anyone not allied to us. They turned out to be very effective during the siege.

According to the stats, the castle we hold - Valkyrie Realms 3, aka Fadhgridh - is the most frequently taken over castle in the game. Its emperium has been broken 24 times over the course of 16 sieges. No guild has ever held it for more than eleven days.

Well. It's time to see if we can make history.
