Notes on The Skies of Orion (Star Trek: Lower Decks)
I discovered Lower Decks last year, and marathoned three seasons in a month. (And then had to wait for the fourth season to come out.)
My recipient had fantastic prompts about Tendi and her conflicted relationship with her Orion heritage. Tendi is also my fave, and this conflict is one of the things about her that intrigues me.
I find it interesting that Tendi and T'Lyn are the only Lower Deckers in the main cast who are nonhuman, and they both wrestle with cultural expectations: T'Lyn because she thinks she's not Vulcan enough, and Tendi because she wants to distance herself from being too Orion. I feel like this is something that could bring them together.
Tendi's title on Orion is "Mistress of the Winter Constellations". During my research, I discovered that winter constellations are a real thing:
"While northern hemisphere observers can observe a total of 30 constellations at various times of the year, there are seven constellations traditionally associated with the winter months, headed by Orion, with its nearby constellations including Canis Major, Gemini, Taurus, Perseus, Eridanus, and Cetus."
(Northern Hemisphere Constellations of the Winter Sky, James Miller, Astronomy Trek)
Orion is one of the winter constellations! This has to be an intentional choice by the writers.
The title of the fic was inspired by The Skies of Pern, which is just a damn cool title, and stuck in my head.
