SUPERNATURAL IS LOVE

If I ever did that "describe your fandoms as though they were relationships" meme, the entry for Supernatural would go something like this:
"The first year I knew you, I liked hanging out together because you were charming and dorky and fun to be with. Then one day I turned around and you were totally smoking hot and how come I never noticed before?"
So why has this show suddenly taken over my life?
Well...
It's about two brothers on a road trip across America, searching for their missing father and the demon that killed their mother. It's about the monsters they hunt and the people they save along the way. It's about mythology, the ghost stories and urban legends and traditional folklore of a culture.
In a way, the show is a love letter to the heartland of America - the world of small towns and wild forests and the long black road that runs between them, a strange and fascinating landscape punctuated by truck stops and diners and discount motels. For a long time, a road trip across America has been on my list of things to do before I die - but Supernatural makes me want to pack my bags, throw them in the boot of the car, and just drive.
It's not just some monster-of-the-week show. It's about love and loss and obsession and devotion. It's about family, and how it screws you up and how it saves you. But most of all, it's about these two guys as different as night and day, who share the same blood and the same quest, and who would die for each other.
And that's just Season One.
Season Two kicks it into overdrive - the story arc revs up, the angstmeter spikes, and the show that used to be good for a scare and a laugh has now eaten my brain. So yeah, new happy shiny thing, and I just wonder that it took this long to see it.
