There are a thousand reasons I fell in love with Season One of Heroes. But at its heart:

Because it's about ordinary people - those with *and* without extraordinary abilities - who are heroes. People with doubts and fears and weaknesses, who nonetheless find the courage to step up and the compassion to reach out, and risk themselves to help others.

Because it's full of hope and optimism. Because it celebrates the best of the human spirit, at a time when many other shows have a bleak and nihilistic attitude. Because in the end, it is love that saves the day.

By a strange coincidence, I bought the first 3 episodes of Heroes a day or two ago. I have not seen it yet, but I've been told by nearly everyone who knows me in passing that it's the sort of show I'd like. I expect I'll finally be able to watch them tomorrow.

I hope you enjoy them! The first three episodes should give you a good idea of whether you'll like the show or not. It only took one to hook me.

Sometimes I try to think slightly deep thoughts about why I love Heroes - such as the optimism you mention (totally my kind of optimism, as opposed to the Star Trek kind that doesn't do much for me), or the style of storytelling, or the types of characters.

And then, at other times, I just think things like "Ando's facial expressions are the most excellent things ever!!", or "Dorky scarves hooray!"

Because in the end, it is love that saves the day.

I nearly fell off my chair during the finale, and was all, "Did I undertsand that correctly? Did love just save New York??!" Cool.

I guess I'm just a big sap, because that was such a perfect ending. And I think Des'ree's song "You Gotta Be" would be exactly right for a Heroes vid, because the chorus is all "love will save the day".
