Well. It was better than the previous episode.
One of the reasons I like Supernatural is because it reminds me of the X-Files in the early days, when the violence happened offscreen and the scares came from what your imagination supplied. Eventually, the X-Files went down the road of gore, and I'm really hoping Supernatural isn't going the same way. Because that chainsaw scene in the teaser - we know what's going to happen, all right? You don't have to show it. Cut away! Cut away!
Anyway. The monster of the week storyline was well done. The changelings were genuinely scary, and when it comes to freaky kids, Katie has to rank pretty high. The sense of creepiness was heightened by the silences which would normally be filled with background music and ambience.
That said, I'm not too fond of how Dean is being written this season. His tendency towards stuffing his face and trying to pick up girls is being played so heavyhanded it's become caricature. And it didn't help that his possible son Ben was a caricature himself. I'm sorry, no kid his age is going to talk and act like that. At least I sincerely hope not. It wasn't funny, just painful.
And Dean's way of connecting with this kid is by teaching him how to fight dirty to beat up a bully. It's a striking contrast to Dean's interactions with Lucas in 'Dead in the Water', where he connected with that traumatised kid by opening up to him and telling him about the loss of his own mother. What happened to that guy?
Sam fared somewhat better with his storyline. Ruby is an interesting addition to the show. And "I can help you save your brother" was a cool last line.
